death echo machine consisted of an 15 meter analogue 1/4 inch tape loop providing a three and a half minute sonic delay. Two shotgun microphones were concealed in the gallery space as were 2 loudspeakers. The immediate sound from the environment was recorded and displaced in time by 3 minutes at which point it was subsequently transmitted back into the environment. This created a combination of fragmented and distorted acoustic environments in which conversations would repeat themselves and words of farewell would echo quite some time after the individual in question had already departed from the space. This unusually long delay created an acoustically rich space. This was due to the feedback inherent in the placement of the microphones and speakers. The empty room would hum with resonant legacy of previous sonic events.
